We are happy to join with Neal Christensen and Outback Therapeutic Expeditions to introduce this new teleseminar to parents with teens due to come home shortly from their wilderness program. We have held this discussion inside programs for two years now. Parents often follow us out to the car with questions, even asking if they can pay us hourly to continue talking with them. This confirmed just how concerned most parents are with the transition from treatment. When we later had the opportunity to speak with a few of the parents who participated, they said that they LOVED the content and “couldn’t take notes fast enough!”
It has been our goal since we founded Homeward Bound, nearly seven years ago, to do all we can to dramatically improve the long-term success of teens coming out of treatment. Holding a teleseminar is one of the best ways we have found to do just that, without it costing families a penny.
By listening in you will benefit from the vast experience we’ve gained as our team of adventurous coaches have helped hundreds of families transition their teens either home, or to an independent living situation. There’s no need to repeat the mistakes others have made. Many of the obstacles that cause relapse are preventable. This is why we have no doubt that if you listen, take copious notes, and apply what we teach you, you’ll improve the outcomes for both your teen and your family significantly, guaranteed!
Here are some of the things we’ll cover:
- The four phases of transition and how to navigate each one successfully
- Why you must set realistic expectations for yourself and your teen around the transition, weeks before discharge
- Two key messages to communicate while the teen is still in the secure environment of a treatment program
- Ways to strengthen yourself as a parent for taking back on the full-time parenting role
- Ways to genuinely appreciate and highlight the growth that’s occurred for your teen while not giving too much freedom too soon
- Managing the most common fears and anxieties parents and siblings feel around the transition
- Ridding yourself of any residual guilt around sending your child into wilderness to avoid sabotaging your teens momentum
- How to appropriately celebrate the homecoming
- How to enjoy the honeymoon without extending it artificially
- How to capture early transition momentum to carry you through the testing that is to come
- When the testing starts, welcome it as an “expected visitor”
- Things you should NEVER say or do during the testing phase
- It’s a long haul – how to keep your stamina up, when complacency is tempting
- Timely and logical ways to expand the trust and privileges for your teen through the maintenance phase
Whether you use decide to use aftercare support or not, you will be far better prepared to bring your teen home after joining us for this hour of highly practical and pertinent information.
We look forward to having you on the call so we can share with you many of our secrets to handling this most important stage of treatment, that of the transition back into the real world.
Looking forward to helping your family, any way we can.
Warmly,
– Tim and Roxanne Thayne
